Instructor Bio
Photographer, Creative Director
Wai Ng has been a visual artist for more than 20 years. His striking editorial photographic spreads have appeared in a variety of publications, including American Baby, Parents, Cutekid of the Year, American Salon, American Spa, Footwear News, W and WWD.
Wai’s portfolio also includes Advertising and promotional images for clients ranging from Deutsche Bank, Georgia State University, Reuters and the New York Stock Exchange to Vitamin Water, Mecca USA and Nike.
Wai’s personal work reflects an innate ability to bypass the expected to capture meaning and motivation behind his subjects. Wai’s photographs has been featured in several gallery exhibits, including MoMA P.S.1.
Wai lives in New York City with his family.
Course Structure
Week 1: Introduction to Photography (2 hours)
Course objectives
Basic concepts: Composition, Lighting, Focus
Introduction to table-top photography
Fieldwork
Students take photos of their choice: people, products, food, etc.
Week 2: Outdoor Photography and Review (2 hours)
Brief review of everyone’s fieldwork
Outdoor photography techniques
Fieldwork
Class goes outside to take photos together
Individual assignments based on outdoor session
Week 3: Group Discussion, Critique, Post-Processing and Preparing for the Exhibition (2 hours)
Group critique of fieldwork
Introduction to post-processing techniques
Preparing for the exhibition
Fieldwork
Students finalize their photos for the exhibition
Post-processing assignments
Week 4: Exhibition and Celebration (2 hours)
Setting up the exhibition
Celebrating success and reviewing key learnings
Materials Needed
Required:
iPhones (students should bring their own)
Optional:
Tripods for stability
Portable lighting setups
Backdrops for product photography
Exhibition materials: frames, printouts, etc. (additional fee may be required)
