McMillian Tutorials LLC: Empowering Students and Families Through Education and Mentorship
Education has the power to transform lives, but access to quality academic support is not always equal. This belief inspired McMillian Tutorials LLC, a faith-based, family-owned, and Black-owned organization dedicated to making affordable tutoring and mentorship accessible to students and families from all backgrounds. Founded by husband-and-wife team Jimmy McMillian and Ashley McMillian, the company was created with one mission in mind: helping people "Prepare for Life."
The idea for McMillian Tutorials grew from Jimmy and Ashley's firsthand experience seeing the educational achievement gap between students in underserved communities and those with greater access to resources. Jimmy and Ashley wanted to become part of the solution by providing affordable, high-quality tutoring, mentorship, and career guidance that empowers learners of all ages. Over the past five years, their work has supported students and adults at every stage of their educational journey. This includes state exam preparation, ESL support, college admissions guidance, final exam preparation, law school readiness, and career development.Their impact can be seen in the success of students who have earned acceptance into institutions including Columbia University, the University of Pennsylvania, Queens College, St. John's University, Molloy University, and many others, while countless clients have also secured internships and meaningful career opportunities.
Like many family-owned businesses, one of the greatest challenges wasn't simply growing the company, it was learning how to balance marriage and entrepreneurship. As co-founders, Jimmy and Ashley had to navigate the unique dynamic of being both business partners and husband and wife. They learned the importance of setting healthy boundaries, creating dedicated time for business discussions while also protecting their personal relationship through intentional quality time together. Finding that balance has allowed both their marriage and business to thrive.
As McMillian Tutorials expanded, another challenge emerged: building the right team. While attracting applicants was never the issue, finding educators who genuinely aligned with the company's mission and values required patience and careful selection. The founders also had to learn how to trust others to represent the same level of care and excellence they personally provided by hiring thoughtfully, communicating clearly, and fostering a culture built on purpose and excellence, they've created a team that reflects the heart of their organization.
A significant part of McMillian Tutorials' growth has been its partnership with the Tech Incubator at Queens College (TIQC). he incubator introduced Jimmy and Ashley to opportunities they never knew existed, connecting them with mentors, business resources, and a network of entrepreneurs who helped them think bigger about the future of their company. Through TIQC, they were introduced to organizations such as the Queens Chamber of Commerce, received access to free legal support through programs funded by Grace Meng, and connected with professionals who helped strengthen the legal and operational foundation of their business.
TIQC also introduced the founders to the Small Business Development Center (SBDC), where mentorship helped refine their long-term business strategy, strengthen their organizational structure, and further develop initiatives like their Comprehensive College Prep Program. In addition, participation in entrepreneurial communities such as One Million Cups and Essential Connections allowed them to build relationships with fellow founders, exchange ideas, and gain inspiration from other growing businesses. Learning about opportunities such as MWBE certification and government contracting further expanded their vision for the future. For Jimmy and Ashley, TIQC provided far more than information - it provided access, confidence, relationships, and a roadmap for sustainable growth.
When asked what advice they would give aspiring entrepreneurs, their answer is simple: build a strong foundation from the very beginning. Building clear processes and expectations creates consistency, which builds trust with both clients and employees. They also believe that humility is essential to growth. No entrepreneur succeeds alone, and lasting success comes from surrounding yourself with talented people who share your vision. Their philosophy is captured perfectly in the saying: "If you want to go fast, go alone; if you want to go far, go together." As a faith-based business, they also credit their success to keeping their faith at the center of every decision, allowing purpose to guide both their business and personal lives.
Looking ahead, McMillian Tutorials LLC has an exciting future. The company recently became an approved New York City Department of Education vendor and has already submitted its first proposal to serve students through the city's education system. The founders are also pursuing MWBE certification while expanding partnerships with educational institutions, including their goal of becoming a vendor for City University of New York campuses. They are preparing to officially launch their Comprehensive College Prep Program after successfully refining it over the past three years and continue to expand their community impact through speaking engagements, mentorship, and strategic partnerships. Whether through tutoring, college readiness, career development, or public speaking, Jimmy and Ashley remain committed to their mission of helping individuals prepare for life and achieve their fullest potential.
At the heart of everything McMillian Tutorials does is a commitment to helping people build brighter futures. Through education, mentorship, faith, and service, Jimmy and Ashley continue to create opportunities that extend far beyond the classroom empowering individuals to prepare not just for school, but for life.
